Remember the SEISS Grants for the self-employed?

I thought it was wishful thinking to believe that the self-employed grants would not be mentioned again. But now we are seeing the fallout from this.

HMRC are starting to issue demands to taxpayers who they believe have been overpaid SEISS grants.

However, I need to let you know that:

  • At the time of the grants being issued, you had to state that your trade had been affected by COVID. This didn't mean that your turnover had to drop, merely that it was lower than you anticipated. So please don't assume that HMRC issuing demands with the benefit of hindsight, is necessarily correct.
  • If you are a client of BKB, HMRC may not let us know that they have sent a demand to you, so please do check with us if you have received such a demand. HMRC are simply refusing to speak with us without an additional authorisation letter on file to deal with this matter (I would love to meet the person who thought that was a good idea).

Please don't ignore the demand either. You have 30 days to either pay the tax or appeal it.

If you have any questions, please call the office and one of team will be able to help you.
